Athanasios Vitsas was born in Chora Samothrace in 1965. He is a graduate of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ioannina.

He is serving his second term as Mayor, starting on January 1, 2024. His first term as Mayor was during the municipal period from September 1, 2014, to August 31, 2019.
