Ioannis Skandalis

Ioannis Skandalis is Associate Professor of Labour Law at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Attorney-at-Law before the Supreme Court of Greece, and Collective Disputes Mediator before the Greek Organisation of Mediation and Arbitration (OMED).

In his academic capacity, he teaches labour law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervises doctoral research. His scholarly work is complemented by extensive legal practice, with particular expertise in complex labour law matters, including cross-border mergers and transfers of undertakings, as well as advisory work in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, banking, communications, and transportation.

He completed his undergraduate studies at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and pursued his graduate and doctoral studies at both the above institution, as well as the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. His academic qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Law (2013), a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Law (2009), and a Magister Juris (MJur) (2008) from the University of Oxford. He also holds an LL.M. in Labour Law (First Class Honours, average grade 9.5/10) (2007) and an Undergraduate Degree in Law (First Class Honours, average grade 8.64/10) (2006) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

His current research focuses on the evolution of the concept of subordination in modern labour law, the development of effective mechanisms to ensure compliance with working time regulations in the digital labour market, and the role of social clauses in transnational commercial agreements in safeguarding fundamental labour standards within the global economy.

He is the author of four monographs: Posting of Employees within the European Union (Nomiki Vivliothiki, 2025); Employees’ Participation in Company Management Bodies as a Form of Institutional Participation (Nomiki Vivliothiki, 2023, in Greek, co-authored with Professor Ioannis Koukiadis); Working Time: Its Delimitation in Contemporary Labour Law (P.N. Sakkoulas, 2017, in Greek); and Balancing Employer and Employee Interests: Legitimate Expectations and Proportionality under the Acquired Rights Directive (P.N. Sakkoulas, 2016).

His broader publication record includes numerous articles and contributions to edited volumes in the field of labour law. Recent publications include: “Critical Analysis of Directive 2024/2831 on Improving the Working Conditions of Platform Workers and Its Anticipated Impact on Greek Law” (DEE 2025, pp. 450–471); “Economically Dependent Self-Employed Individuals” (DEN 2024, pp. 334–348); and “A Critical Approach to the amendments Introduced by Law 5053/2023 on Working Time” (Greek Justice 2024, pp. 39–49).
